Questions & answers
Everything people ask us.
Short, honest answers. If yours isn't here, write to us and we'll answer you — and add it to this page.
Is it really free?
Is TTA Africa really free?
Yes — completely, for every course and every certificate. There is no fee, no subscription, no trial that ends and no payment details to enter. We are funded by donations, sponsors and our shop. If anyone ever asks you to pay to learn on TTA, or to pay a "registration" or "certificate" fee, it is a scam — please tell us.
Will you ask me for money later?
Never to learn. You will sometimes see an invitation to give, because gifts are what keep TTA free — but it is always optional, we never ask children for money, and nothing is ever locked behind it.
Do I need a laptop, or will my phone do?
Your phone is enough for most courses. Each course says which device it needs, and you can filter the catalogue by On my phone or On a computer. Courses that genuinely need a computer — like DevOps or video editing on a desktop — say so clearly before you start.
How much data will it use?
Lessons are YouTube videos, so it depends on the quality you choose. Tap the gear icon in the player and pick 360p to use far less data. Add TTA to your home screen and the site itself loads almost instantly afterwards, even on a slow connection.
Certificates
How do I get my certificate?
Finish every required lesson in the course and pass its practical task. The certificate is issued automatically the moment the last requirement is met, and you'll find it under My certificates. You'll get a notification — and an email if your phone can't be reached.
Why is my certificate taking so long?
Almost always because a practical task is still waiting for a mentor to read it. A real person reviews every task against a published marking guide, which can take a day or two. You can see what you're waiting for on the certificates page.
Is the certificate recognised by employers?
It is issued by TTA Africa Limited and every certificate carries a number anyone can check at ttaafrica.com/verify — so an employer can confirm it is real in seconds. We are honest about this: it is not a university degree or a vendor exam like CCNA or AWS. What makes it carry weight is that it is backed by work a mentor reviewed, which most online certificates are not.
My name is wrong on my certificate. Can you fix it?
Yes. Correct your name in your profile first, then message us and we will reissue it. Certificates print the name on your account, so it is worth checking before you finish a course.
How do I check that someone's certificate is real?
Go to ttaafrica.com/verify and enter the certificate number printed on it (it looks like TTA-7K3P-Q9XD). If it exists, you'll see the course, the name and the date it was issued.
Learning on TTA
How do I find a course I actually want?
Use the search box on the courses page or on your dashboard, then narrow it by topic, your stage of life, or whether you want phone-only courses. If what we recommend doesn't fit, change your interests from your dashboard and the recommendations change with it.
Why am I being recommended courses I'm not interested in?
Recommendations follow the interests you picked at sign-up, your stage, and what people who finished the same courses went on to take. If they feel wrong, tap Change my interests on your dashboard — that is the single biggest thing you can do to improve them.
Can I learn in French?
Yes. Switch language in the footer, or go straight to ttaafrica.com/fr/cours. Many courses exist in both languages, taught by French-speaking teachers rather than translated subtitles.
Do I have to finish a course in one go?
No. Your progress is saved lesson by lesson and your dashboard always offers to pick up exactly where you stopped — even on a different phone.
What is a practical task, and who marks it?
It's a piece of real work — a video you edited, a page you built, a photo you took, a recording you made. A TTA mentor reads it against the marking guide published in the task itself and either approves it or tells you specifically what to change. You can resubmit as many times as you need.
How do I turn reminders off?
On your dashboard, under reminders, tap Turn off — or block notifications for ttaafrica.com in your browser settings. We send at most one short message a day and never spam.
Safety, parents and privacy
My child wants to use TTA. Is it safe?
It is built for young learners. Certificates are hidden from search engines. In discussions, learners only ever see a first name and an initial — never a full name, a phone number or an email. We never store IP addresses, and anything a learner writes that contains contact details is held for a moderator automatically. For younger learners we ask for a parent or guardian's phone number rather than the child's.
Why do you ask my age?
To avoid showing a 10-year-old a course written for adults, and to report honestly to sponsors how many young people we reach. Age is never shown publicly.
Do you sell my information?
No, never — and we never show your details publicly. The full detail is on our privacy page, in plain words rather than legal language. Parents and guardians can ask to see, correct or delete their child's information at any time.
Someone posted something abusive. What do I do?
Tap the flag on the comment. It goes straight to our moderators, and a comment with several reports is hidden automatically while it is checked.
My account
I can't sign in.
Use the same method you signed up with — if you created your account with Google, use the Google button rather than a password. If the page won't load at all, it is usually a weak connection or a data saver blocking our sign-in service: try again on another network. Still stuck? Message us.
Can I change my name, school or country later?
Yes, any time, from your dashboard. If you have already earned certificates, message us after changing your name and we'll reissue them.
Can I delete my account?
Yes. Message us and we remove your personal details within 30 days. Tell us if you'd like your certificates to stay verifiable.
About TTA, and working with us
Who is behind TTA Africa?
TTA Africa Limited, founded in 2025 by Owoh Rejoice Chidera. It began as The Tech Advantage, an NYSC community development project that reached 8,118 young people, and became a free learning platform open to the world. The whole story is on our About page, and what we do with what we are given is on our accountability page.
Can I teach or mentor on TTA?
Yes, and we need people. Mentors review practical work in a subject they know; instructors build courses; experts record short spotlight videos. Write to us with what you'd like to teach and a link to your work.
My school, company or organisation wants to work with you.
Please do — we run outreaches in schools and communities with demonstrations and TTA cards for every student, and we work with sponsors and partners. Start on our partner page.
Where does the money go?
Outreaches, TTA cards for children, devices for top learners, mentors who review practical work, and running the platform. Live figures and our documents are on the accountability page.
